You're bored. You've scrolled through everything, you don't want to watch anything, and you don't feel like downloading a game. What you need is something you can open right now and just play.
Here are the best browser games for exactly that situation.
Tic tac toe
Simple, fast, and genuinely satisfying. Tic tac toe is one of those games you never get tired of because every match is different depending on who you're playing. You can go solo against the computer, play locally with someone sitting next to you, or invite a friend online and play in real time with a shareable room code.
The whole thing runs in your browser with no download and no account. A game takes about 60 seconds. It is a perfect time-killer.
Chess
If you want something that takes a bit more mental effort, chess is hard to beat. Lichess.org is completely free, has no ads, and lets you play against real people or an AI at any skill level. You can also do puzzles if you just want to practise without committing to a full game.
Chess sounds intimidating but there are plenty of beginner-friendly modes. Even if you barely know the rules, it is worth trying.
Wordle
Wordle gives you one word puzzle per day. You get six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with colour clues after each guess. It takes about five minutes and is a nice daily ritual if you like word games.
The original is free on The New York Times website. There are also hundreds of Wordle variants if you want more than one puzzle a day.
Sudoku
If you prefer numbers to words, sudoku is a great option. The rules are simple: fill a 9x9 grid so that every row, column, and 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. No maths involved, just logic.
Web Sudoku has been around for years and has millions of puzzles at four difficulty levels. Easy games take a few minutes. Hard games can keep you busy for a while.
2048
2048 is one of those games that is very easy to understand and very hard to put down. You slide numbered tiles around a 4x4 grid and combine matching numbers to reach 2048. The catch is that every move adds a new tile, so the board fills up faster than you expect.
It sounds simple. It is not. Most people get addicted on the first try.
Skribbl.io
If you want to play with friends, Skribbl.io is a free online drawing and guessing game. One player draws something, everyone else tries to guess what it is. It works well with two people or a full group, and the drawings are usually funny enough to keep things entertaining even when the guessing gets difficult.
No account needed. Just share a link and start playing.
Terni Lapilli
If you enjoy tic tac toe, it is worth trying Terni Lapilli. It is the ancient Roman version of the game, over 2,000 years old. The twist is that each player only has three pieces and once they are all placed, you slide them around the board instead of adding new ones. It sounds like a small change but it makes the game feel completely different.
It is also free and runs right in your browser.
Most of the games on this list are free, work on any device, and do not require you to make an account. If you are just looking for something to fill a few minutes, tic tac toe is still the fastest way to get into a game. Give it a go.
